The challenge to Apollo ─Dong-rong Guo’s oil painting exhibition

This July,the 3rd season of 2007「To find the root and to build Taiwan arts history」exhibition which will be hold at every arts centers in Taiwan. Started from July 4th the Jin-Zhou arts center would display「The challenge to Apollo ─Dong-rong Guo’s oil painting exhibition」。Writer Zhang-hua Chen wrote the introduction to lead the readers to visit the oil painting world created by Dong-rong Guo.

| ◆ Curiosity 1985 oil painting 130×162cm | As long as I saw or heard the name of「Dong-rong Guo」these years. The painting of NTNU costume ball always showed up in my mind's eye.That was the work of Dong-rong Guo’s oil painting in 1995 Graduation Display. The oil painting no.120 indicated the splendid performance of the 4 years in NTNU。More than twenty people wearing different masks or face-painting in the painting. Full of ineradicable characters that showed the mystical atmosphere. Just like a TV series, all the actors & actress are prepared and ready for the show time. Even the masks of clown were vivid and jumping out to the screen.
When Dong-rong Guo was young, he seemed to know that he would be an artist.。Such changeable、freely、romantic、fantastic genius that can mixed reality & the imagination, happiness & saddness…Unlike other painters search for series of theme and build unique idea style. In his 60 years of creative life, he always searches for new and changes. Just like account in his own words：「There is no fixed style in my painting, no style is my style」
Dong-rong Guo named the paints with different style by different time. And his painting skill is free with ease. Sometimes he just like a normal painter with freestyle and lively energy. His early year in NTNU or oversea studied in Waseda University and Tokyo University of Arts, thatDong-rong Guo had built up his sketch skill. And oil painting technique which origin from the western renaissance period to afterwards that helped his paintings.
Many of his works were based on real life such as「The challenge to Apollo no.11」in 1973 and「Children’s wish」in 1985。After the period of martial law In 80s,Dong-rong Guo used his tragedy background to accomplish the paintings with theme of mayor election、Ch'engpo Chen received punishment parades、President election in 2000 and so on. Although these paintings reflected the true feeling of his, however you may also find the romantic in the characters and the scenes. Compare with the works in Japan during the same period, it showed another new style. Dong-rong Guo emphasized: The style is valued because it forms naturally, you cannot sacrifice your self-feeling. You will never find the so-called unique or identical style in the material, method and the content that he used. However, you may still find them rich in time with inner spirit in every single painting of his.
Dong-rong Guo always insists his creative aesthetics「To show oneself」，He thought to join the art business you must try as much as possible. His slogan「It is the beauty to show one self’s inner feeling」We may see the changeable performance by his early works and presents including practicality ,abstract, half abstract, the ultra reality and so on.
The so-called modern paintings would become the conservative academicism tomorrow. Therefore, we don’t have to follow the change of the skill blindly. He had the feeling to found to American painter Jackson Pollock established the technique to draw the picture without pen in 1947.Various of drawing skills emerged in few years and formed every kind of modern works. However, not all of them can withstand the test of time. Thus he never stopped studying in the creation technique for many years. During his diligently creating ,he also kept his enthusiasm about everything in his life. He regarded the object to decide the theme, also depended on then subjective emotion to reflect the manifestation. Under his drawing the life and the visual impact, becomes the best description of the mood in society. This is his style:“No style is his style!”
